LONG-TERM DISASTER RECOVERY
We live and work in a Community where healthy food and groceries are available in abundance if you have the means. But families with children, seniors, and other individuals right in our midst often struggle to make ends meet, and they and need our support.
When disaster strikes, it is important to have resources in place that our community can turn to for support. Whether it’s food and clothing during the immediate emergency, or household goods when it’s time to rebuild, Unity Shoppe has boots on the ground – ready to assist our neighbors in need.
Recovering from a disaster is a gradual process which occurs over an extended period of time. Unity’s unique Long Term Disaster Relief program was developed to accommodate an immediate emergency response while offering continued support during the advanced stages of rebuilding.
In 2008 Unity Shoppe joined forces with the American Red Cross and the Food Bank of Santa Barbara County to form the local chapter of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD).
This collaborative effort consolidates services in order to ensure that emergency assistance is readily accessible when Santa Barbara needs it most.
“When we strive to improve the economic situation or sense of hopelessness experienced by our neighbors, we mustn’t ever forget to show them respect and elevate their dignity at every turn.”
